Leading professional bodies, including many Inside Careers partners, have joined forces to launch the UK’s first ever Professions Week.
Professional bodies CIOT, CIPA, CISI and ICAEW amongst others have come together to promote the professions and increase awareness of the range and variety of potential graduate and school leaver jobs the professions have to offer.
A lack of awareness
According to research released by the professional bodies, a lack of careers advice in schools is leading to young people making uninformed careers choices.
The survey of 1,200 14-19 year olds from across the UK looked at awareness of different careers. It found that less than 20% of those surveyed had a good idea what someone who worked as a patent attorney, executive coach, civil engineer, or an investment or pension manager does.
Ruth Martin, Managing Director of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI), one of the founding professional bodies of Professions Week said: ‘This survey demonstrates that knowledge about different career paths, including the many opportunities in the investment sector, is critical if young people are to make informed choices about their future. We must do everything we can to help ensure that schools and colleges are equipped to be able to provide high quality careers advice and information.’
