The Internship programme

Deadline for applications is 5th January 2024. We will run assessment centres in January and February 2024.  

During your time at PKF, you will be a part of one of the largest audit practices in the UK and have the opportunity to gain valuable insights and experience across various divisions in our business.

Our internship programme will provide a combination of actual client work in our Not for Profit department, and the chance to work on a project within our Audit and Tax teams.  You will have the opportunity to learn more about these divisions and the sectors we specialise in, as well as gain hands-on experience of what working at a leading accountancy business entails.

Throughout your time with us, you will  receive support, guidance and training from our senior professionals to help further your career in the future.

On completion of the internship, you will receive a certificate from us to take with you during your career, showcasing your successes and achievements.

Not for Profit team

Our Not for Profit team understands that the core purpose of its clients is to address needs in society, not to reap the benefits of profit.  As a team of people passionate about the sector, we value and respect this mission. Many of the team have worked in the not for profit sector before returning to practice, and everyone shares a passion for delivering strong social outcomes and also financial sustainability – we describe ourselves as sector people who happen to be in practice, rather than the other way round.


As part of our contract with Smaller Authorities Audit Appointments Limited – on behalf of the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities – we perform limited assurance reviews on around 4,000 smaller authorities across England including local councils, internal drainage boards, and other smaller authorities.  We are seeking to recruit a team of paid interns over the summer to help us fulfil this contract.

You will be expected to carry out basic compliance procedures on the Annual Governance and Accountability Returns (AGARs) submitted by smaller authorities.  You will be fully trained on all aspects of the role and will shadow more experienced members of the team to learn how the process works.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Review the information received from each smaller authority;
  • Identify where insufficient information has been received and contact the authority for outstanding information/documentation
  • Use our bespoke audit software, to:
    • File all necessary documents onto the electronic system;
    • Document your review of the data included in the AGAR by completing the review work programme;
    • Sign off the work performed on the AGAR electronically;
  • Identify and report contentious matters to more senior members of the team; and
  • Ensure the database records the current position for each review.

You will receive comprehensive training in all areas such as:

  • The review process;
  • Background to the reviews;
  • Identifying areas where further work is required; and
  • Use of the following software:
    • Bespoke audit software – where you will record the results of each review;
    • The Smaller Authorities Database – which records the status of each review;
    • Virtual Cabinet – our paperless filing system; and
    • Internal recording systems and procedures – such as time recording.

Minimum requirements

  • On track to achieve at least a 2:2 degree or above
  • Minimum of 112 UCAS points (2017 tariff) from three A-C A Levels, or equivalent (excluding General Studies)
  • Minimum of GCSE grade 4/C in Maths and English Language (or equivalent)
