What do our tax teams do?
Tax is a fact of life – it’s deducted from our wages, added to things we buy, paid by companies and it’s rarely out of the news headlines these days. But a career in tax isn’t just about numbers. It’s about working with people and businesses to really understand what they want to achieve and to make sure that tax doesn’t become an obstacle to their long-term goals.
We advise individuals, families and their related trusts and companies, which hold their wealth, primarily on tax issues. We help them meet their tax reporting obligations and advise them on how to structure their assets in a tax efficient manner. Understanding the client, their families and their long term objectives is crucial, as is working alongside their bankers, trustees and legal advisers to ensure that all advice is part of a cohesive plan.
We advise companies of all sizes and from all sectors of business, helping them comply with the complex UK tax regime and also, in many cases, the tax regime of several overseas territories. Getting involved with compliance work will allow you to get to know your clients’ businesses well, and therefore we will expect you to spot opportunities for them to benefit from tax incentives or to avoid potentially costly pitfalls. Tax compliance and advising on a company’s tax affairs are an important part of all major corporate strategies and RSM can help them get this right.
Indirect Taxes are applied to all transactions, from coffee to car insurance, and they impact businesses across all industries. Indirect Tax case law and legislation across the world changes regularly. As a result, our clients’ needs and concerns are also often changing meaning our work is challenging and varied with new ideas and opportunities to discuss.
In our People Advisory Services, our team advises companies and individuals on a whole host of matters from remuneration planning and share incentive schemes to the interaction of global taxes when companies move people from one jurisdiction to another. Getting company tax compliance obligations right in respect of PAYE and national insurance contributions is an important part of the job as well as individual tax return filing requirements including the jurisdiction they may need to comply to. Your role involves regularly coordinating with our RSM International network and as part of the team, you will need to understand domestic employment taxes regulations and the interaction of these with international tax treaties and social security legislation.
What can you expect?
Our programme will give you a solid foundation in a broad range of tax issues. With us, you’ll be involved in projects from day one – anything from liaising with clients to preparing and completing tax returns for HMRC. The variety of work we do and the range of clients we work with mean you’ll have plenty of opportunity to discover a career path that fits your interests and long-term goals. With our support you’ll have the space to grow professionally so you can confidently take on ever-more challenging tasks. An apprenticeship in Tax offers top quality career development whilst earning a competitive salary. Tax apprentices at RSM gain hands-on experience, have access to on-the-job mentoring and train towards a professional qualification, starting with the ATT qualification. We are committed to ensuring that the route through to qualification is the best for you as an individual and maximises your potential. Alongside your technical training, you will attend internal developmental training courses to ensure you have the professional and personal skills to become a trusted tax advisor. As you come towards the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll have a deep understanding of Tax. This will be reflected in the complexity of your client portfolio and your responsibilities, including mentoring more junior members of the team.
What we look for
Tax is a technically demanding discipline, so we look for school leavers who are always up for a challenge and are quick to grasp new subjects. While you don’t have to be a maths genius, you will need to be comfortable with numbers. At RSM, you’ll be helping a big range of clients – from wealthy individuals to major multinationals – so it’s important that you’re adaptable. You’ll often need to explain complex technical information during client meetings and in written reports, so we’re looking for school leavers with excellent verbal and written communication skills. We also look for team players who enjoy interacting with others and are curious about how businesses work. If that sounds like you, we know you’ll enjoy being part of our team.
Please note for those who perform well throughout our assessment process, should your first geographic preference be unavailable, you could potentially be offered a role in another location or facility. This would be discussed with you in this instance.
RSM will only take one application into consideration per intake. We do not accept multiple applications to different vacancies.
