The Role

As a member of the audit graduate intake, you will be part of a team undertaking audits of client’s financial statements and similar assurance work.  This will be combined with undertaking your ACA studies.    Over your three year training contract, you will progress from assisting on audits to leading your own assignments.

In your first year, you will work within teams completing audits on a number of different clients in a variety of industries.  You will be provided with on the job training to help you understand the purpose of the audit work as you assist with the completion of detailed audit work. The majority of your assignments will be based at client’s offices, where you will get to interact with client staff.   Our trainees spend around 10 weeks a year studying towards the ACA with structured training provided by external tutors, spread out over the year.  You will also spend time in the office when you will be finishing off audit fieldwork, preparing clients’ accounts, iXBRL tagging accounts for HMRC, preparing for the next audit or undertaking ad hoc tasks. You will also attend clients’ stocktakes, where you will observe their stocktaking procedures and perform test counts.

You will now be able to assist the new intake of graduates and share the knowledge you have gained in your first year.  As you progress, you will also have the opportunity to lead smaller audits.

When you are in your third year, you should have experienced every part of the audit file and a large number of companies from a diverse range of industries. You will have more opportunities to lead assignments, will be tackling complex areas and taking a leadership role on some of our larger audits.  You will have the opportunity to coach and train junior members of staff. During the final year of your training contract, you will have passed your final ICAEW exams.

What is Audit?

An audit will involve, amongst other things, gaining a knowledge of the clients business and financial systems; assessing the risks of misstatement within the financial statements; planning and completing tests of key transactions and balances, including examining the underlying books and records that support those transactions and balances; ensuring compliance with relevant financial reporting standards, the Companies Act and other relevant legislation; and making recommendations to clients in respect of areas of potential improvement in clients’ systems and processes.
