- Name: Tess Alexander
- Job Title: Audit & Accounts Manager
- Company: Gravita
- Areas of Specialism: Audit and Assurance
- University: Leeds
- Degree: Accounting & Finance
My strengths at school were always in more maths based and analytical subjects which is why I decided to study accounting and finance at university. When I graduated, the natural progression was to find a graduate scheme to get my professional qualification, as I knew this would give me good job security and would open doors to a range of opportunities.
What I didn’t realise is that I would get such a unique insight into a range of businesses and industries, and get to speak and work with the most senior people in a client’s business so early in my career. I really enjoyed my time during my ACA whilst I studied so when I qualified, I decided to stay and have since been promoted 3 times to my current position as a manager.
I completed my ACA qualification after a three year training contract. Since joining, the company has supported me with my ongoing continuous professional development, providing both internal and external training courses to assist both my technical knowledge and soft skills.
I am currently a Manager in the audit and accounts department. My day to day role involves working with various different teams within the department, reviewing and helping them complete their work, as well as liaising and meeting with clients. I also line manage some of the members of the team, and attend networking and socialising events.
Over the last 7 years my role has been constantly expanding and I have been there to witness it. My aim is to eventually be part of the leadership team and have a say in the future growth of the company. The most important thing to me is that I enjoy what I do and I continue to find it interesting and challenging. The great thing about having a professional qualification is that there are many opportunities available to me if I do decide to move out of audit.
One of the best things about working here is the company culture. There are lots of different ways to get involved socially. They take interest in helping you shape your career path as they have a designated learning and development officer. I was also recently lucky enough to get a 6 month sabbatical to travel which was an amazing opportunity, and it was great that I could come back and pick up where I left off.
